Sacred Art of the Himalaya

What Is a Thangka?

A thangka is a Buddhist painting on cotton or silk, traditionally mounted in a silk brocade frame so it can be rolled, carried and hung. The art form developed across the Himalaya and Tibet and is widely practised in Nepal. It is used as a visual aid for meditation and devotion and as a teaching tool.

The Kathmandu Valley has a living painting heritage of its own: the Newar paubha tradition. Together with the Tibetan schools practised around Boudhanath and Swayambhu, it makes Nepal one of the world's leading centres for authentic thangka art.

Every element follows strict rules: deity proportions, colours, hand gestures (mudras) and symbols. Each one carries meaning, expressing compassion, wisdom and the path to enlightenment.

The Painting Process

From Blank Canvas to Sacred Art

A fine thangka can take weeks to months to complete. These are the traditional stages.

Canvas Preparation

Cotton canvas is stretched, primed with gesso and burnished smooth with a stone.

Iconometric Drawing

The deity is drawn on a precise proportion grid, following sacred rules.

Base Colours

Ground pigments are mixed and applied in flat layers, from background to figures.

Shading & Blending

Many fine layers create depth in clouds, robes and faces.

Outlining

Ultra-fine brushes define every contour, ornament and pattern.

Gold Detailing

Real gold is applied, then burnished to make it glow.

Opening the Eyes

The eyes are painted last, traditionally the moment the image comes alive.

Brocade Mounting

Optional silk brocade frame, rods and dust cover, or shipped unframed and rolled.

Buyer's Guide

Hand-Painted vs. Printed Reproductions

Printed or "touched-up" prints are often sold as thangkas. Every piece we supply is genuinely hand-painted, and here is how to tell the difference.

✓ Signs of a genuine hand-painted thangka

  • Brush strokes and slight raised texture visible under light
  • Fine gold lines with a real metallic sheen
  • Canvas weave visible on the back, with no printed dots
  • Tiny natural variations between "identical" pieces
  • Artist and material details provided

✗ Red flags of a printed copy

  • Flat, perfectly uniform colour with no brushwork
  • Dot pattern visible under a magnifier
  • Gold that looks like yellow ink
  • Paper or synthetic base instead of cotton canvas
  • Very low price for large, "detailed" work

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a thangka painting?

A thangka is a Buddhist painting on cotton or silk, traditionally mounted in silk brocade so it can be rolled and hung. Thangkas depict Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, deities, mandalas and Buddhist cosmology, and are used for meditation, devotion and teaching.

What is the difference between a thangka and a mandala?

A thangka is the painting format: a hand-painted, often brocade-mounted Buddhist image. A mandala is a specific subject, a circular, geometric diagram of a sacred universe that is often painted as a thangka. Popular mandalas include the Kalachakra, OM and Lotus mandalas.

Are your thangkas really hand-painted?

Yes. Every piece we supply is 100% hand-painted on canvas. We never sell prints or touched-up reproductions, and we state the grade, materials and gold content on each quote.

Do you use real gold and natural pigments?

Fine and master-grade thangkas use mineral and natural pigments with real gold detailing, and master pieces use 24K gold. Workshop-grade pieces may use quality acrylic or mixed colours. We always tell you exactly what each piece uses.

Can I commission a custom thangka?

Yes. You can commission a specific deity or mandala in your chosen size, grade, colours and mounting. We share progress updates and photos, and timelines range from a few weeks for workshop grade to several months for master pieces.

Can thangkas be legally exported from Nepal?

Yes, newly made thangkas can be exported. Nepal requires art objects to be cleared by the Department of Archaeology to confirm they are not antiques, and we arrange this clearance together with all other export documents.

How are thangkas packed and shipped?

Unframed thangkas are rolled with acid-free tissue in rigid tubes. Brocade-mounted pieces are wrapped and boxed. We ship by insured air courier or freight, door-to-door.

Do you offer wholesale pricing?

Yes. We supply galleries, retailers, meditation centres and hotels with flexible mixed-subject wholesale orders across workshop, fine and master grades. Contact us for a catalogue and quote.
